The genus Aedes belongs to the Culicidae family within the order Diptera. While these insects are not agricultural pests of plants in the traditional sense, they represent a significant biological factor that disrupts animal husbandry and labor efficiency on farms.

The economic impact of Aedes is primarily associated with livestock damage. Constant harassment by blood-feeding females prevents animals from grazing properly, leading to reduced weight gain, lower milk yields, and increased susceptibility to diseases. The stress caused to cattle, horses, and small ruminants is a constant challenge for livestock producers.

The life cycle of these insects consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Aedes mosquitoes are known for their resilience, as eggs can withstand drying periods and hatch rapidly when flooded by rain or irrigation. This makes poorly managed drainage systems or waterlogged fields ideal breeding grounds for mass emergence.

The main harm inflicted by these insects involves physical exhaustion, severe skin irritation, and the transmission of various pathogens. In extreme cases, high mosquito pressure can disrupt farm operations, as workers and animals suffer from constant bites, which may also facilitate the spread of secondary infections and allergic conditions in herds.

Integrated control strategies involve:

  • Managing field drainage to prevent stagnant water accumulation.
  • Applying biological larvicides to breeding sites like ditches and ponds.
  • Providing physical protection (insect-proof screens and repellent treatments) for livestock.
  • Monitoring population spikes using specialized traps.
  • Maintaining surrounding landscapes to reduce micro-habitats favored by mosquitoes.
