Taxonomic position: The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) belongs to the order Diptera, family Culicidae. Originally native to Southeast Asia, this species has become one of the most successful invasive insects worldwide, colonizing diverse habitats and posing severe challenges to public health and agricultural environments.

While Aedes albopictus is not a phytophagous pest and does not feed on plant tissues, it is a significant nuisance for agricultural operations. Its diurnal activity pattern and aggressive biting behavior disrupt field work, fruit harvesting, and nursery operations, directly impacting labor efficiency and the safety of agricultural workers.

Biology and Life Cycle: The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in small, stagnant water containers. Crucially, the eggs are highly resistant to desiccation, which facilitates their long-distance dispersal through international trade of used tires, industrial equipment, and nursery plants.

Impact and Harmfulness: The primary danger is that the mosquito serves as a vector for numerous viruses, including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. In the context of agro-businesses, the high density of this mosquito can lead to worker absenteeism and reduced working hours in outdoor areas, particularly in sheltered, shaded spots where the mosquitoes prefer to rest and hunt.

Control Measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Aedes albopictus effectively:

• Source reduction: Eliminating any stagnant water in irrigation equipment, pots, or gutters.
• Larvicide application: Using Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) in water bodies where drainage is impossible.
• Monitoring: Deploying specialized traps to detect early infestations.
• Barrier treatments: Applying residual insecticides to resting sites around greenhouses and storage facilities.
