Golden longhorn beetle

Aeolesthes aurifaber is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. This beetle is recognized as a significant stem-boring pest that poses a serious threat to forestry and fruit orchards in its native range. The adult beetle is known for its distinct golden-colored appearance, from which its common name is derived.

The pest primarily targets deciduous tree species. Host plants include various nut-bearing trees, citrus species, and a wide array of ornamental and forest trees. While the beetle often attacks trees that are already stressed or weakened, it can also infest healthy trees during periods of high population density, ultimately leading to branch dieback or total tree mortality.

The life cycle of this beetle is intimately tied to the tree’s interior wood. Females oviposit in bark fissures or wounds on the trunk. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the wood, excavating complex galleries. This cryptic lifestyle, where the larvae and pupae remain hidden deep within the stem or large branches, makes early detection and treatment extremely difficult.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By feeding on the cambium and xylem, they disrupt the vascular system, effectively cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the upper parts of the tree. Common symptoms include exit holes in the bark accompanied by sawdust (frass), leaf yellowing, premature defoliation, and the death of individual skeletal branches. If untreated, the infested tree will eventually succumb to the damage.

Management strategies focus on an integrated approach utilizing cultural and sanitation practices:

• Prompt removal and proper destruction of infested trees to limit population spread.
• Routine sanitation pruning and cleaning of trunk wounds, followed by the application of sealants or disinfectants.
• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and reduce pest populations.
• Maintaining high levels of horticultural care, including adequate irrigation and fertilization, to bolster tree resilience.
