African citrus whitefly

Taxonomic classification. The African citrus whitefly (Africaleurodes citri) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is a specialized insect pest known for its negative impact on evergreen plants, particularly those within the Rutaceae family, often causing economic losses in citrus-growing regions globally.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets citrus species, including lemons, oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits. While highly adapted to citrus, the whitefly can occasionally be found on other evergreen shrubs when population levels are extreme, though citrus remains its primary ecological niche and host of choice for reproduction.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of the African citrus whitefly comprises the egg stage, three larval instars (nymphs), a pupal stage, and the adult stage. Females typically deposit eggs on the undersides of young leaves to provide protection and nourishment. The speed of development and the number of generations per year are highly correlated with temperature and humidity, which favor rapid population expansion.

Nature of damage and harm. Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap, which causes the foliage to lose vigor and eventually wilt. A critical secondary symptom is the secretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal layer covers leaves and fruits, severely inhibiting photosynthesis and respiration, leading to premature leaf drop and reduced fruit quality.

Control measures. Effective management of Africaleurodes citri requires an integrated approach:

• Frequent field scouting to identify infestation hotspots early.
• Use of yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce adult whitefly populations.
• Application of selective systemic insecticides during the peak nymphal emergence period.
• Pruning to improve airflow and reduce humidity levels within the tree canopy.
• Implementation of biological control programs using beneficial parasitic wasps and predators.
