These microscopic organisms are known for colonizing the aerial parts of plants, causing significant physiological and morphological distress. As specialized parasites, they interact closely with their host plants, often leading to severe infestations that compromise plant health and development.

The host range of Afrina primarily includes various ornamental species, particularly those in the Caryophyllaceae family. These nematodes thrive in environments where they can access host tissues directly, typically settling in buds or leaf axils. Their presence is often detected only after visible symptoms appear, making early monitoring essential for effective management in professional horticulture.

The biology and lifecycle of Afrina are strongly dependent on moisture levels. These nematodes require a thin layer of water to move across plant surfaces to locate new infection sites. After penetrating the host tissue, they feed on cell contents using their stylets. Their rapid reproduction rate allows for exponential population growth, especially in protected environments like greenhouses where humidity is consistently high.

In terms of damage, Afrina infection leads to stunted growth, stem twisting, leaf deformation, and the formation of galls. The feeding activity interferes with the plant’s normal physiological processes, causing metabolic shifts and increasing susceptibility to secondary pathogens.
