Description
The strawberry stem nematode (Afrina tumefaciens) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Anguinidae. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode that represents a major phytosanitary threat to strawberry production globally, often causing significant economic losses.
The primary host for this pest is the cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). The nematode thrives in moist environments, utilizing water films in the soil and on plant surfaces to move between hosts. Infestations are most commonly introduced into new fields through contaminated nursery stock or farming equipment.
The life cycle of the nematode is closely linked to the plant's growth stages. The larvae and adults reside within the plant tissue, where they feed on cell contents using their stylets. This feeding process triggers abnormal development in the plant, disrupting internal transport systems and causing stunted physiological growth.
Damage is characterized by distinct symptoms such as twisting, thickening, and brittleness of petioles and runners. Flowers and fruits often become severely deformed, while the overall growth of the plant is significantly inhibited. This leads to a substantial reduction in both the quantity and quality of the strawberry yield.
