Agabus biguttatus is a species of diving beetle (Dytiscidae) within the order Coleoptera. While typically perceived as a predator in natural ecosystems, it can pose a challenge in commercial settings such as aquatic nurseries, rice paddies, or decorative aquatic plant production, where it interacts negatively with cultivated vegetation.

This species is characterized by its preference for running water and spring-fed streams. The biology of the beetle is tightly linked to aquatic habitats. Adults are strong flyers, allowing them to colonize new water sources rapidly. Both larval and adult stages are predatory, meaning their primary impact is often indirect, though feeding damage on plant tissues during foraging is documented.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid within the tissues of aquatic plants or on submerged debris. Larvae are highly active hunters. Pupation occurs in the damp soil along the banks, making the life cycle resilient to fluctuating water levels and environmental stresses.

Damage occurs primarily through mechanical injury to young stems, leaves, and root systems. These wounds facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which often cause more significant damage than the beetles themselves. In intensive culture systems, this can lead to reduced plant vigor and crop loss.

Management and control strategies focus on habitat modification and mechanical exclusion:
