Minute diving beetle

The minute diving beetle (Bidessus minutissimus) is a small aquatic insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Noteridae. While often overlooked in traditional soil farming, this species has gained attention in controlled environment agriculture, specifically within hydroponic and aquaponic systems where water quality and root health are paramount.

This pest primarily affects crops grown in water-based systems, such as leafy greens, lettuce, and various culinary herbs. Because these plants are suspended with roots directly in nutrient solutions, they become vulnerable to the larvae and adults of these beetles, which frequent the nutrient channels and reservoirs.

The biology of Bidessus minutissimus is characterized by a complete metamorphosis within the aquatic environment. The female deposits eggs on submerged surfaces or plant roots. Larvae develop through several instars, feeding on organic debris or, in the absence of other prey, scraping the surface of the root system, which compromises the integrity of the plant's nutrient uptake organs.

The damage caused by these beetles is often indirect but significant. By grazing on the epidermal cells of roots, they create wounds that facilitate the entry of waterborne pathogens like Pythium or Phytophthora. This secondary infection often leads to root rot, causing stunted plant growth and overall yield loss in commercial hydroponic facilities.

Management strategies focus on physical exclusion and sanitization. Growers should implement fine-mesh filtration systems to prevent beetles from entering nutrient reservoirs. Regular sterilization of the water supply using UV-C light or hydrogen peroxide treatments is highly effective. Maintaining strict hygiene in greenhouse environments is critical to breaking the life cycle of the beetle and ensuring plant health.
