Copperheads and Cottonmouths

The genus Agkistrodon, commonly known as copperheads and cottonmouths, belongs to the family Viperidae, order Squamata. While they do not consume crops, they are considered an agricultural hazard that disrupts field management operations. Their presence on farms significantly increases the risks to human safety and can lead to operational delays during critical planting and harvesting periods.

These snakes are typically found in damp environments, overgrown field edges, and near irrigation channels. Crops that offer dense canopy coverage or serve as habitats for rodents are highly attractive to them. As predators, they follow the population density of field mice and voles, often settling in agricultural land where these rodents thrive due to the abundance of food sources like grains.

The biology of the Agkistrodon is centered on thermoregulation and the availability of prey. They are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young after internal incubation. During the winter, they brumate (a state of low activity) in underground burrows or hollow spaces below the frost line. These hibernation sites are often located in permanent field boundaries, old foundations, or storage area infrastructures.

The primary concern regarding these snakes in an agricultural setting is the threat of envenomation to farm workers. A bite can cause severe tissue damage, requiring urgent medical intervention and leading to long-term health complications. Furthermore, the psychological impact of their presence can lead to a refusal of personnel to work in infested zones, resulting in significant labor force downtime.

Effective management strategies for minimizing interactions with these snakes involve habitat modification and risk mitigation:

• Regular mowing of tall grass and vegetation around field perimeters and machinery parking areas.
• Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control rodent populations and reduce the attractiveness of the area.
• Eliminating debris piles, wood, and unnecessary equipment storage that provides shelter for the snakes.
• Providing education and protective personal equipment (PPE) for field staff to ensure safe working conditions.
