Bronze birch borer

The bronze birch borer (Agrilus anxius) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a highly destructive pest native to North America, known for causing significant decline and mortality in various birch species, particularly those under environmental stress.

The primary hosts of this pest include the paper birch, white birch, and gray birch. While healthy trees can sometimes mount a defense against initial attacks, trees weakened by drought, soil compaction, or poor site conditions are highly susceptible to infestation and colonization.

The life cycle of the bronze birch borer is typically one to two years depending on the climate. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer, feeding on foliage. After mating, females lay eggs in bark crevices. The larvae bore into the tree, creating zigzag galleries that eventually girdle the branches and trunk, cutting off the flow of nutrients.

Identifying an infestation early is crucial for tree survival. Key indicators include canopy dieback starting at the top, yellowing or thinning leaves, and the presence of D-shaped exit holes on the bark surface. As the larvae tunnel beneath the bark, they disrupt the vascular cambium, leading to the gradual death of the tree.
