Black poplar buprestid

The black poplar buprestid (Agrilus ater) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Buprestidae family. This wood-boring beetle primarily targets tree species within the Populus genus, and occasionally Willows (Salix), acting as a significant pest in both forestry and landscape management.

The life cycle of Agrilus ater typically involves the emergence of adults during the summer months, usually spanning from June to July. After mating, females deposit their eggs into crevices in the bark of trunks or larger branches. Once hatched, the larvae penetrate the bark to feed on the cambium and phloem layers.

The damage caused by the larvae is quite severe. As they feed, they create meandering, winding galleries beneath the bark, which disrupt the flow of nutrients and water within the tree. Over time, these galleries become packed with frass, and the resulting injury leads to bark necrosis, crown dieback, and eventually the death of the tree.

Visual identification of an infestation includes exit holes in the bark, which are typically D-shaped, and the appearance of dying branches or withered foliage in the tree crown. Infested trees are often weakened by environmental factors such as drought or poor site conditions, making them more attractive to the beetles.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

• Rigorous sanitation, including the prompt removal and destruction of infested wood.
• Maintenance of tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management.
• Timing chemical applications to coincide with the adult beetle emergence period.
• Regular inspection of park and plantation trees to detect early signs of infestation.

Monitoring is essential for controlling Agrilus ater. By identifying susceptible trees and removing them before the next generation of beetles emerges, foresters and arborists can significantly reduce the potential for widespread damage in poplar plantations.
