Agriotes brevis

Systematic position. Agriotes brevis is a species of click beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. In agricultural settings, the larval stage of this insect is commonly known as a wireworm, which is considered a significant soil-borne pest capable of causing substantial economic damage to various agricultural crops.

Host plants. This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plant species. The larvae typically attack cereals such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as root crops like potatoes and sugar beets. They are particularly destructive in fields that have been recently converted from grassland or permanent pasture, where wireworm populations tend to be higher.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Agriotes brevis is complex and usually spans several years, with the majority of this time spent as larvae inhabiting the soil profile. The development follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (multiple instars), pupa, and adult beetle. Larval activity and vertical movement within the soil are heavily influenced by soil moisture, temperature, and food availability.

Damage and harmfulness. The primary economic damage is caused by the larvae feeding underground. They bore into germinating seeds, devour roots, and tunnel into the lower stems of seedlings. This results in poor plant stand, stunted growth, and crop failure. Furthermore, the feeding injuries create entry points for secondary soil-borne pathogens, leading to further decay of the crop root system.

Control measures. Effective management of Agriotes brevis requires an integrated approach to minimize population levels:

• Crop rotation, specifically rotating out of susceptible cereals or root crops to less favorable hosts.
• Tillage practices, such as deep plowing, which physically disrupts the soil, killing larvae and exposing them to predators.
• Seed treatment with appropriate insecticides to protect germinating seeds from initial larval attack.
• Rigorous weed management, as specific weeds act as secondary food sources that support wireworm survival.
