Lined click beetle

Systematic position. The lined click beetle (Agriotes lineatus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest worldwide, particularly in temperate regions where it poses a constant threat to soil-grown crops.

Host crops. The larvae, commonly referred to as wireworms, are polyphagous and feed on a wide variety of plants. Primary targets include cereals (wheat, barley, corn), root crops like potatoes and sugar beets, as well as sunflowers and various vegetables. No part of the crop is entirely safe from their underground feeding activity.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the lined click beetle is prolonged, typically lasting between 3 to 5 years. Most of this time is spent in the larval stage within the soil. Adult beetles appear in spring and are surface feeders, while the larvae migrate vertically through the soil profile in search of optimal temperature and moisture levels.

Damage and economic impact. Wireworms cause severe destruction by feeding on germinating seeds, roots, and subterranean stems. This feeding behavior stunts growth and often results in total crop failure for seedlings. Furthermore, their tunneling into tubers and root crops creates entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, reducing crop quality and marketability.

Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest:

• Implementation of crop rotation patterns to disrupt the pest's development cycle.
• Thorough and regular tillage to expose larvae and pupae to predators and desiccation.
• Use of insecticidal seed treatments to provide protection during the critical emergence phase.
• Application of soil-applied insecticides in fields with high larval density.
• Control of grassy weeds, which are primary attractants for ovipositing females.
