Hairy click beetle

The hairy click beetle (Agriotes pilosellus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. As a significant agricultural pest, it is widely recognized for its damage to various row crops and cereals. While the adult beetles are relatively harmless, the larvae, commonly known as wireworms, are subterranean pests that cause severe damage to the root systems and seeds of crops.

This pest has a broad host range. It primarily targets cereals like wheat and barley, as well as row crops such as maize, potatoes, sunflowers, and sugar beets. The larvae live in the soil for several years, feeding on roots, tubers, and germinating seeds, which significantly reduces plant population density and hinders the growth of young crops.

The biology of Agriotes pilosellus involves a multi-year life cycle. Females lay eggs in moist, vegetated soils. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo multiple instars, gradually moving deeper into the soil profile depending on moisture levels and seasonal temperature changes. Once the larval development is complete, pupation occurs in the soil, followed by the emergence of the adult beetle.

The damage caused by wireworms is often invisible until the symptoms of plant stress appear. Larvae chew deep tunnels into roots and stems, often leading to the wilting and eventual death of the plant. Field areas with high infestation rates often show irregular growth patterns, missing plants, and decreased total yield, requiring farmers to take immediate action to manage the population.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep fall tillage, and rigorous weed control—particularly targeting couch grass—are essential. Chemical control is frequently achieved through the use of soil-applied insecticides or high-quality seed treatments designed to protect the germinating seed and the vulnerable early root system from larval attack.
