Systematic position: The red-palped click beetle (Agriotes rufipalpis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. As a member of this family, it is recognized for its larvae, commonly known as wireworms, which are among the most destructive subterranean pests in global agriculture.

Host crops: This species is a generalist feeder, targeting a wide range of commercially significant plants. Crops frequently affected include cereals, maize, potatoes, sugar beets, and sunflowers. It often poses a major threat to crops planted in fields recently converted from grasslands or those with heavy weed infestations, which provide optimal conditions for larval survival.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is complex, usually spanning several years. Adults emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs in moist, vegetated soil. Larvae develop underground, passing through multiple instars over a period of 3 to 4 years. They are highly sensitive to soil moisture and temperature, performing vertical migrations through the soil profile to find suitable environmental conditions.

Damage and economic importance: The larval stage causes the most severe damage by feeding on seeds, roots, and underground stems. This feeding activity leads to stunted growth, wilting, and plant mortality. Severe infestations can cause significant thinning of crop stands, leading to substantial yield losses and necessitating costly replanting efforts in many instances.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for mitigating the impact of Agriotes rufipalpis.
