Dark click beetle

The dark click beetle (Agriotes ustulatus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. While the adult beetles feed on flower parts, it is the larvae, commonly known as wireworms, that represent a severe threat to global crop production.

This species is polyphagous, attacking a wide variety of cultivated plants, including cereals, maize, sunflowers, sugar beets, and potatoes. The larvae dwell within the soil, where they cause extensive damage by feeding on seeds, developing roots, and the underground parts of stems, eventually weakening or destroying the plants.

The life cycle of the dark click beetle is prolonged, typically lasting from three to five years depending on environmental conditions. Larvae pass through several instars while remaining in the soil, moving vertically in response to temperature and moisture fluctuations. They tend to migrate to the upper soil layers during spring to feed on early crops.

Wireworm damage is characterized by thinning stands, reduced plant vigor, and often the complete destruction of germinating seeds. Heavily infested fields may suffer from significant yield losses. Furthermore, the feeding tunnels created by wireworms serve as entry points for various soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary fungal infections.
