Mouse-colored click beetle

Systematic position: The mouse-colored click beetle (Agrypnus murinus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. It is a widespread insect species whose larvae, known as wireworms, are recognized as significant pests in agricultural landscapes throughout Europe and parts of Asia.

Crops and damage: The species feeds on a wide range of host plants, including cereals, root crops, and vegetables. Wireworms reside in the soil and feed on germinating seeds, roots, and underground stems. This subterranean damage leads to thinning of crop stands, stunted growth, and potential total yield loss in severely infested fields.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Agrypnus murinus is protracted, often lasting between 3 to 5 years. Most of this period is spent in the larval stage underground. Adult beetles emerge in the spring to feed on foliage, but the primary economic damage is caused by the larvae, which live in the soil layers throughout their development.

Pest significance: The difficulty in managing this pest arises from the wireworm's ability to migrate vertically within the soil profile. They move up and down based on soil moisture and temperature, allowing them to escape harsh conditions and remain present in the rhizosphere where crops are most vulnerable during the early growth stages.

Control measures: Management of the mouse-colored click beetle requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize damage:

• Utilizing crop rotation with non-host plants to disrupt the pest's cycle.
• Implementing deep tillage practices that expose larvae to surface predators and desiccation.
• Treating seeds with appropriate systemic insecticides to protect the plant during the critical germination phase.
• Applying soil-incorporated insecticides at the time of planting if larval density exceeds economic thresholds.
