Variable click beetle

The variable click beetle (Agrypnus variabilis) is a beetle belonging to the Elateridae family. In agricultural contexts, it is widely recognized as a significant soil-dwelling pest, primarily due to its larvae, commonly known as wireworms, which cause substantial damage to the root systems of various important economic crops.

Systematically, the species is classified under the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by their elongated, flattened bodies and the unique ability to flip themselves upright when placed on their backs, accompanied by an audible clicking sound produced by a specialized mechanism on the thorax.

The biology and life cycle of Agrypnus variabilis are defined by a prolonged development period, often spanning several years depending on environmental conditions. Eggs are laid in the soil, and the larvae pass through several instars, feeding on organic matter, roots, and germinating seeds during their subterranean life stage.
