While many related species are notorious agricultural pests known as wireworms, Alaus putridus primarily occupies niches associated with decaying wood, acting as a potential pest only when its natural habitat is encroached upon by horticultural activities.

The biology of this species is tied to the degradation process of timber. Larvae develop within rotting logs, stumps, or the basal parts of aging trees. In agricultural settings, such as new orchards established on cleared forest land, these larvae may shift their feeding habits to the roots and crowns of young, vulnerable fruit trees.

The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most prolonged and significant phase. During this period, the larvae navigate through moist, organic-rich environments, utilizing their strong mandibles to forage through decaying plant matter and, occasionally, the living tissues of nearby tree roots.

This physiological disruption weakens the tree, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections such as fungal rots, which can lead to the total collapse of young saplings in nursery environments.
