Aleurothrixus whitefly
Aleurothrixus graneli
Description
Taxonomic classification: Aleurothrixus graneli is a species within the Aleyrodidae family, belonging to the order Hemiptera. As a specialized whitefly, it is primarily known for its high adaptability to citrus-growing environments and its ability to establish dense colonies on the foliage of its host plants.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest include a variety of citrus species, such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruit. In addition to commercial orchards, the insect often infests ornamental citrus plants and greenhouse crops, which can serve as reservoirs for re-infestation of outdoor plantations.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of this whitefly includes the egg stage, four larval instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are usually laid in clusters on the underside of young leaves. Larvae are sessile after the first instar and secrete a waxy substance that acts as a physical shield, providing significant protection against environmental fluctuations and contact pesticides.
Damage and severity: Infestation is characterized by sap-sucking activity that leads to yellowing, leaf curling, and potential drop. A critical secondary issue is the production of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold (black fungus). This mold covers the leaf surface, blocking sunlight and severely impeding the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis.
Control measures: Management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain population levels below economic thresholds.
- Application of systemic insecticides like neonicotinoids during the early larval stages.
- Implementation of biological control using specialized wasps that parasitize the larvae.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts to reduce the initial population.
- Monitoring using sticky yellow traps placed strategically within the canopy.
- Washing foliage with insecticidal soaps to clear the sooty mold and remove sessile larvae.
