Description
Allophyes is a genus of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae. The most prominent member of this group is Allophyes oxyacanthae, often referred to as the Early Thorn or green-brindled crescent. While often viewed as a forest insect, in specific conditions, it can act as a pest in orchards by damaging the foliage of rosaceous plants.
Systematically, this genus is part of the order Lepidoptera. The adults are nocturnal and possess excellent camouflage that mimics tree bark. This cryptic coloration makes them very difficult to spot during daylight hours, which is why monitoring for this pest usually focuses on the larval stage or egg masses during the winter pruning season.
The larvae are primary consumers of foliage. They specialize in feeding on fruit trees such as apple, pear, and hawthorn. Early in the spring, the larvae destroy swelling buds, which can lead to significant yield losses. Later, they move to the leaves, consuming the leaf tissue, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree and impacts overall growth.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. The winter is passed in the egg stage, attached to the bark of host trees. Larval activity peaks in the spring when trees are breaking dormancy. Pupation typically occurs in the soil or in crevices. The adults emerge in the autumn months to mate and oviposit for the next cycle.
Effective management strategies for Allophyes include:
- Mechanical removal of egg masses during winter pruning.
- Soil cultivation around the base of trees to disturb pupation sites and expose larvae/pupae to predators.
- Monitoring pheromone traps if available to track adult flight density.
- Targeted application of biological or chemical insecticides at the start of egg hatching if populations exceed economic thresholds.
