The genus Allotropa belongs to the Ericaceae family and consists of mycoheterotrophic plants that lack chlorophyll. It is important to clarify that this organism is not an insect or a pathogen, but rather a specialized plant that relies on a symbiotic relationship with soil fungi to survive.
Taxonomically, Allotropa is placed within the order Ericales and the family Ericaceae. Unlike traditional pests, such as aphids or fungi, this plant does not feed on the biomass of crops and does not possess mechanisms to damage or infect tissues of economically important vegetation.
