Description

The genus Amitus belongs to the family Platygastridae (order Hymenoptera). These organisms are not pests themselves but are essential parasitoid wasps that act as beneficial natural enemies, primarily targeting whitefly species that damage a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural crops.

These wasps are highly specialized, focusing their parasitic activity on specific life stages of whiteflies, such as Trialeurodes vaporariorum. By locating the host on the underside of leaves, the female wasp utilizes her ovipositor to deposit eggs inside the target larvae, effectively turning the pest into a host for her offspring.

The biological cycle involves the development of the wasp larva inside the whitefly, consuming the host from within. Once development is complete, the adult wasp emerges through a small exit hole in the dead remains of the whitefly scale. This process directly prevents the pest from reaching its reproductive adult stage.

Whitefly damage is characterized by sap-sucking, plant vigor reduction, and the secretion of honeydew which facilitates sooty mold growth. By using Amitus, growers significantly reduce these impacts without the need for chemical intervention, thereby preserving the quality of greenhouse-grown vegetables and ornamentals.
