The Western avocado leafroller (Amorbia cuneana) is a member of the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth species is recognized as a primary pest in orchards, particularly known for its impact on citrus and avocado production, where it can significantly reduce both yields and the quality of harvested fruit.

The host range of Amorbia cuneana includes several commercially important crops. While citrus and avocado are the primary targets, the larvae are capable of feeding on a variety of other plants, including grapes and various broad-leaved trees. Its ability to utilize multiple hosts makes it a persistent challenge in integrated farm management programs.

Regarding its biology and lifecycle, the pest undergoes complete metamorphosis. Depending on the ambient temperature, the insect can complete multiple generations per year. Adults are nocturnal, and females lay eggs in clusters on the upper surfaces of leaves, often camouflaging them with secretion to protect the clutch from predators and environmental stressors.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold: foliar and fruit-related. Larvae spin silk to web leaves together, creating shelters where they feed undisturbed, which stunts plant growth. When larvae attack fruits, they consume the outer rind or skin, creating deep, irregular scars that render the fruit unsuitable for market sale and prone to secondary rot infections.
