Mannerheim click beetle

The Mannerheim click beetle (lat. Ampedus mannerheimi) belongs to the family Elateridae within the order Coleoptera. While the adult beetles are often harmless, their larvae, commonly known as wireworms, are recognized as significant agricultural pests. These insects are widely distributed and pose a serious threat to various crops worldwide.

The larvae primarily infest the roots and underground parts of cereals, potatoes, corn, sugar beets, and diverse vegetables. Because they live beneath the soil surface, they are often difficult to detect until substantial damage to the crop has already occurred. The primary target is the seed or young seedling, leading to poor emergence and reduced stand density.

The biological cycle of this species is complex and usually lasts several years, depending on environmental factors. After hatching, the larvae spend their entire development phase in the soil, feeding on organic matter and living roots. This long developmental cycle makes population control challenging, as the larvae are often deep in the soil and protected from many external conditions.

In terms of economic impact, the damage caused by wireworms is two-fold. First, direct mechanical feeding destroys the root system, stunting plant growth and causing death. Second, the created wounds serve as entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which can destroy the remaining plant parts and reduce the market quality of root crops like potatoes.

To effectively manage the population of Mannerheim click beetle, an integrated pest management approach is necessary:

• Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce food sources.
• Utilizing soil liming to neutralize acidic soils, which are preferred by wireworms.
• Tillage practices that disrupt the soil and expose larvae to predators and environmental stress.
• Applying insecticidal seed treatments to protect the vulnerable germination stage.
• Deploying granular soil insecticides in areas with historically high pressure of infestations.
