Amphinemura is a genus of stoneflies (order Plecoptera, family Nemouridae). While primarily aquatic in their immature stages, these insects can become a concern in agricultural settings that feature high moisture levels, such as fields adjacent to streams, rivers, or poorly drained wetlands, where they occasionally switch to feeding on cultivated vegetation.

This pest typically targets young vegetables, seedlings, and certain berry crops grown in humid environments. The insects thrive in damp soil and near water bodies, making them a recurring issue for farmers working in lowland areas. Their presence can be particularly damaging during the early spring when plants are most vulnerable to defoliation.

The life cycle of Amphinemura involves eggs, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are usually deposited near water sources. The nymphs develop slowly, feeding on organic matter, but during periods of high population density, they may turn to the tender stems and foliage of crops, causing significant stress to the host plants during their development.

Feeding damage is characterized by ragged holes in leaves and gnawed stem tissues, especially near the base of the plant. Such damage restricts the plant's ability to transport nutrients and water, leading to stunted growth, reduced yields, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by pathogens and fungi that infiltrate through the damaged plant tissue.

To control Amphinemura, it is essential to focus on site management. Proper field drainage is the most effective preventative measure. Additionally, maintaining weed-free buffers around fields helps reduce the habitat available to adult stoneflies. When infestations exceed economic thresholds, the application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents can be effective in mitigating further damage.
