Nemoura avicularis is a species of stonefly belonging to the order Plecoptera and the family Nemouridae. While typically aquatic, this insect can occasionally become a pest in agricultural areas adjacent to freshwater habitats where its population density surges during peak emergence periods.

The insect primarily affects crops located in riparian zones or fields with high soil moisture levels. Young orchards and various vegetable crops are at risk, as the adult stoneflies, in search of food or mating sites, may congregate on foliage and cause feeding damage to the plant tissues.

The biological cycle consists of aquatic larvae that feed on organic matter and terrestrial adults. It is the adult stage that poses an agricultural risk. Their development is synchronized with seasonal temperature shifts, which dictates the timing and intensity of their appearance in agricultural fields.

Damage symptoms include irregular feeding patterns on leaf margins and damage to tender buds. While individual damage might be minor, high concentrations of Nemoura avicularis can significantly stunt the growth of young plants and increase their susceptibility to various bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. This includes improving drainage in prone areas, maintaining clean cultivation to reduce breeding sites near crops, and targeted application of biological control agents if the population threshold exceeds tolerable limits for the specific crop.
