The common stonefly (Nemoura cinerea) belongs to the order Plecoptera and the family Nemouridae. Although these insects are predominantly aquatic during their nymphal stages and are recognized as indicators of water quality, they can occasionally emerge as pests in agroecosystems located in close proximity to rivers, streams, and damp fields.

Agricultural crops, particularly those grown in wet soil conditions or flooded areas, can suffer from the feeding activity of stoneflies. When natural food sources such as detritus or algae are scarce, the insects may transition to feeding on the tender tissues of young plants, including vegetable crops and various cereal species.

The biological cycle of Nemoura cinerea consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The nymphal stage is the most prolonged, taking place in aquatic or semi-aquatic environments. Upon reaching maturity, the adults emerge and can aggregate in large numbers near crop fields, where they feed on foliage and buds, causing localized damage to agricultural vegetation.

The damage profile is characterized by irregular leaf skeletonization and the consumption of plant buds. This feeding activity can compromise the health of young seedlings, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and increased susceptibility to fungal or bacterial infections, ultimately impacting crop vigor and marketability.
