Systematic position: The coconut mite, scientifically known as Amrineus cocofolius, belongs to the family Eriophyidae, order Trombidiformes. It is a highly specialized microscopic pest that primarily affects coconut palms, often causing significant economic losses in tropical regions where coconut is a staple crop.
Host plants and damage: The primary host is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). The mites inhabit the meristematic tissues and the surface of young nuts, specifically under the perianth. By feeding on the plant sap, they cause severe damage to the nut surface, leading to scarring, cracking, and deformation, which reduces the size and overall quality of the harvest.
Biology and life cycle: Amrineus cocofolius completes its entire life cycle on the host plant. They are extremely small and reproduce rapidly under warm and humid conditions.
