Systematic position: Amrineus coconuciferae belongs to the family Eriophyidae within the order Trombidiformes. As a microscopic mite, it is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets coconut plantations globally, causing substantial impact on productivity.

Host crops: The primary host for this mite is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It predominantly infests the meristematic tissue of floral buds and the surface of developing fruitlets, making it a critical threat to the reproductive stages of the tree.

Biology and lifecycle: The mite thrives in tropical environments with high humidity. Its lifecycle is rapid, characterized by continuous overlapping generations. The mites hide under the perianth of the coconut fruit, which protects them from environmental stressors and many contact pesticides, complicating control efforts.

Damage and economic impact: Feeding activity causes the epidermis of young coconuts to become scarred, brown, and necrotic. As the fruit grows, the damaged skin cracks, leading to stunted fruit size, reduced copra content, and often premature nut drop. This damage reduces both the quantity and quality of the harvest for both fresh consumption and oil extraction.
