Description
The navel orangeworm (Amyelois transitella) is a significant moth pest within the family Pyralidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive insects affecting various nut and fruit crops worldwide, posing a persistent economic challenge to commercial orchards.
This pest is highly polyphagous, targeting a diverse range of hosts such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts, figs, and various citrus fruits. Beyond the orchard, the navel orangeworm is a major pest of stored products, commonly infesting dried fruits and nut stockpiles in warehouses and processing facilities.
The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a larva inside mummy nuts left on trees or on the orchard floor. Depending on environmental temperatures, the pest can complete multiple overlapping generations annually, leading to continuous pressure on the crop.
The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the nuts or fruit to feed. Their feeding activities not only destroy the interior of the product but also facilitate the entry of pathogens, such as Aspergillus fungi. This can lead to the production of aflatoxins, rendering the crop unmarketable and hazardous to consumers.
