Description

Systematic position. The genus Anaglyptus belongs to the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles), part of the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as wood-boring beetles, specialized in colonizing various broad-leaved trees and sometimes conifers, often targeting weakened or stressed specimens.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts include deciduous species such as oaks, beeches, and hornbeams, as well as several fruit-bearing trees. The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which bores deep galleries beneath the bark and into the xylem. This mechanical disruption interferes with nutrient and water transport, leading to canopy dieback and general tree decline.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Anaglyptus typically spans one to two years depending on the climate. Adults are generally active during the spring and summer months, feeding on pollen and floral nectar. Females lay their eggs within bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the host tissue to feed, creating characteristic tunnels filled with sawdust.

Pest significance. High infestation levels can be devastating, particularly for orchards or managed forest stands. By weakening the tree structure, these beetles often predispose the host to secondary infestations by fungi or other wood-degrading pathogens. This significantly reduces the economic value of timber and the productivity of fruit-bearing species.

Management and control. Effective control requires a proactive and integrated strategy:

  • Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested wood.
  • Enhancement of tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize susceptibility.
  • Use of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight periods.
  • Targeted insecticide applications on tree trunks during the peak adult activity season to prevent egg-laying.
