Description
Systematic position: The mystical longhorn beetle (scientific name Anaglyptus mysticus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is classified as a wood-boring insect that targets various deciduous trees and shrubs.
Host plants: The beetle primarily infests fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, plums, cherries, and sweet cherries. Additionally, it is frequently found in woodland environments, attacking beech, oak, hazel, hornbeam, and blackthorn, which can serve as a reservoir for infestation in nearby orchards.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles emerge during late spring and early summer. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices or wounds on the trunks and branches. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the wood, creating extensive galleries as they feed on the plant tissue, which allows them to grow and develop before eventually pupating inside the wood.
Nature of damage and pest impact: The damage is caused by larvae mining the sapwood and heartwood. This activity disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, severely weakening the host plant. Over time, this leads to reduced fruit yields, branch dieback, and in cases of heavy infestation, the eventual death of the entire tree.

Integrated pest management strategies include strict sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested branches.
