Anaglyptus simplicornis

Anaglyptus simplicornis is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. As a wood-boring insect, it primarily targets the woody parts of trees, making it a significant concern for orchardists and forest management specialists.

This pest infests a variety of deciduous trees, including fruit species like apple and pear, as well as several hardwood forest trees. The beetle is known to exploit trees that are already stressed, damaged, or suffering from environmental factors, although it can occasionally infest healthy specimens.

The life cycle involves an egg-laying phase where adults deposit eggs into bark crevices. The resulting larvae bore into the sapwood and cambium layer. They spend most of their developmental time feeding on the wood, creating intricate tunnels that disrupt the vascular tissues of the host plant.

Visible damage usually includes the presence of frass (sawdust) near the tree base or bark fissures, yellowing foliage, and dieback of branches. If the infestation remains unchecked, the cumulative structural damage to the tree can lead to the decline of entire branches or the death of the tree.

Effective management strategies center on prevention and sanitation. Owners should prioritize removing dead or dying branches, maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and irrigation, and applying protective coatings to tree trunks to prevent adult beetles from finding suitable spots for oviposition.
