Description
Taxonomic classification. The common apple leafroller (Ancylis achatana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a well-known pest in temperate fruit orchards, characterized by specific larval feeding habits that distinguish it from other moth species within the same family.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets members of the Rosaceae family. It is most commonly found on apple and pear trees, though it also thrives on plums, cherries, and various hawthorn species. These plants provide both the food source and the micro-habitats necessary for the insect’s life cycle completion.
Biology and life cycle. The species completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the second or third instar, hidden within small silk-lined hibernacula tucked inside bark crevices or near leaf buds. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on budding foliage, eventually reaching the pupal stage in late spring, followed by adult moth emergence in early summer.
Damage and economic impact. The primary economic damage occurs in early spring when larvae consume developing buds, preventing leaf or flower development. Later, larvae roll leaves into tubes or irregular clusters using silk threads, feeding inside these protective enclosures. This damage leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and potential loss of yield if the infestation occurs during the flowering stage.
