Selenana leafroller

The Selenana leafroller (Ancylis selenana) is a moth belonging to the family Tortricidae, known for its impact on various fruit-bearing plants. As an agricultural pest, it primarily affects the foliage, where its larvae feed and create protective shelters, making them difficult to target with conventional contact pesticides.

The primary host range of Ancylis selenana is concentrated within the Rosaceae family. Its presence is most frequently documented on apple, pear, and cherry trees. The larvae are opportunistic feeders, often targeting young, developing leaves early in the season, which provides the necessary energy for their rapid growth and development.

Regarding its biological cycle, the pest overwinters as a larva within a silk cocoon, usually hidden in bark crevices or under plant debris. Upon the arrival of spring temperatures, the larvae resume feeding and eventually undergo pupation within folded or rolled leaves. The adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the leaves, starting the cycle anew.

The damage caused by the Selenana leafroller is characterized by leaf skeletonization and rolling. The larvae spin silk webbing to pull leaves together, creating a micro-environment that protects them from predators. Sustained infestation results in significant foliage loss, stunted twig growth, and decreased vigor of the host plant, ultimately threatening fruit yield.
