Description
Systematic position: The Oak twig pruner (Anelaphus parallelus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles. It is recognized primarily for its unique method of pruning host tree branches during its larval development stage.
Host plants: This pest attacks a wide variety of deciduous trees, including oaks (Quercus), maples (Acer), apple trees (Malus), pears, and walnut trees. It is particularly common in landscapes and forests where these host species are abundant, often affecting both healthy and stressed trees.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle typically spans one year. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer to lay eggs on the bark of small twigs. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the center of the twig. As the larva matures, it creates a characteristic concentric cut within the twig, causing it to break and fall to the ground, where the larva continues to feed or pupate.
Damage and impact: The damage is easily recognizable by the presence of fallen twigs during the summer months.
