Description

Systematic position: The twig girdler (Anelaphus villosus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (long-horned beetles). This species is specialized in its larval development, which involves pruning twigs from host plants to create a protected environment for growth.

Host plants: This pest is polyphagous and infests various deciduous trees. Common hosts include oaks, hickory, apple, pear, peach, maple, and grapevine. It prefers young, healthy trees or those stressed by environmental conditions, often targeting small to medium-diameter branches.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle typically spans one to two years. Adult beetles emerge in the spring and summer to mate and lay eggs. After hatching, the larva bores into the wood of a twig. It feeds internally while moving toward the base of the branch, where it meticulously girdles the wood from the inside, causing the twig to snap off.

Nature of damage and harm: The most evident sign of infestation is the presence of severed, brown-leaved twigs dangling from tree canopies or lying on the ground. While rarely lethal to mature trees, the aesthetic damage, loss of fruit-bearing wood, and potential for secondary infections make it a nuisance in both ornamental and orchard settings.

Protection measures: Management is primarily focused on sanitation practices. Since the larvae remain inside the severed branches, it is crucial to collect and destroy the infested material (burning or chipping) before the adult beetles emerge. Chemical controls are generally impractical due to the larvae's protected environment deep inside the wood.
