These insects are easily recognized by their extremely flattened body morphology, an evolutionary adaptation that allows them to inhabit the narrow, dark spaces beneath the bark of deciduous trees, effectively shielding them from many environmental threats.

The primary hosts for this species include common deciduous trees such as alder, birch, willow, and aspen.
