Aspen flat bug

The Aspen flat bug (Mezira tremulae) is a member of the Aradidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known for their highly specialized, dorsoventrally flattened bodies, which allow them to inhabit the narrow spaces between the bark and the wood of their host trees with remarkable efficiency.

This pest primarily infests trees belonging to the Populus genus, such as aspens and various species of poplars. It is typically classified as a secondary pest, as it preferentially seeks out trees that are already stressed, weakened by environmental factors, or suffering from underlying fungal infections, rather than attacking healthy specimens.

The biology of Mezira tremulae is characterized by a sedentary lifestyle. Both nymphs and adults spend their entire life cycle protected under the bark. They feed on plant fluids, primarily from the phloem and cambium layers. Their reproduction is tightly synchronized with the growing season, and they typically overwinter in the nymphal or adult stage beneath loose bark scales.

The damage caused by the Aspen flat bug is cumulative. By feeding on the tree's vital fluids, they cause localized tissue necrosis, which disrupts the transport of nutrients within the tree. Over time, heavy infestations lead to bark cracking, secondary rot, and increased susceptibility to other pathogens, eventually resulting in the decline or premature death of the tree.

Effective management and protection strategies are focused on forestry hygiene and silvicultural practices. Key measures include:
