Description
The flat bug (Aneurus laevis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aradidae. These insects are characterized by a highly flattened body, which is an evolutionary adaptation for life in the narrow, restricted habitats found underneath tree bark.
The species primarily infests a variety of deciduous trees, including birch, alder, beech, and oak. It prefers trees that are already physiologically stressed or have decaying bark, where the environment supports the development of the bug's life cycle.
The biological cycle of Aneurus laevis is strictly subcortical. The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, with both nymphs and adults residing in the same habitat. They feed on plant juices and associated fungi found within the crevices of the bark.
The damage caused by these bugs is largely indirect but significant. By tunneling and feeding under the bark, they compromise the integrity of the cambium layer. Furthermore, they facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as wood-decaying fungi, which accelerate tree decline.
