Description
Systematic position. The Annona fruit borer Anonaepestis belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. As a specialized pest, it is highly adapted to exploit the fruit tissues of plants within the Annonaceae family, often leading to significant losses in orchards where these exotic fruits are cultivated.
Host crops. This insect primarily targets various Annona species, including Annona cherimola (cherimoya), Annona muricata (soursop), and Annona squamosa (sugar apple). The pest is a critical concern for growers in tropical and subtropical regions where these fruits are economically important.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths lay their eggs on the surface of developing fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the interior of the fruit, where they feed on the flesh and seeds, remaining concealed throughout their larval development until they are ready to pupate.
Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of the larvae destroys the internal structure of the fruit. By tunneling through the flesh and accumulating frass, the larvae introduce secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which cause rot. Heavily infested fruit will drop prematurely, rendering the crop unmarketable and causing substantial yield reductions.

Cultural practices are paramount, including the consistent removal and destruction of infested fallen fruit to reduce population density.
