Asian longhorned beetle

Systematic position: The Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) is a member of the Cerambycidae family within the Coleoptera order. Originating from Asia, it has become a severe invasive species, causing massive ecological and economic damage to forests and urban landscapes across North America and Europe.

Host plants: This insect is a highly polyphagous wood-boring pest that attacks a variety of hardwood species. Preferred hosts include maples (Acer spp.), horse chestnuts, poplars, willows, elms, and birches. It poses a catastrophic risk to biodiversity, as it can kill both weakened and healthy trees alike.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle typically spans one to two years depending on temperature conditions. Adult beetles emerge from the wood, feed on foliage and twigs, and mate. Females lay eggs individually under the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive tunnels that compromise the structural integrity of the host tree.

Nature of damage and pest importance: The damage is primarily caused by the larvae feeding inside the trunk and branches. This tunneling disrupts the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, resulting in crown dieback, limb failure, and eventual tree death. Common signs of infestation include perfectly round exit holes, frass (sawdust-like material) at the base of the tree, and bark depressions.

Control measures: Management of the Asian longhorned beetle is primarily based on eradication efforts. This includes mandatory removal and destruction (chipping or burning) of infested trees to eliminate the population source. Strict quarantine regulations on the movement of firewood and nursery stock are essential to prevent further spread, as there are no effective long-term chemical control strategies for established infestations.
