Chinese David's longhorned beetle

Systematic position. The insect belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles or wood-boring beetles. It is a member of the Anoplophora genus, which includes several highly destructive quarantine species capable of devastating forest ecosystems and landscape plantations.

Host plants. The primary targets of this pest are various hardwood tree species. The most commonly attacked hosts include plants from the Salicaceae family, particularly poplar and willow species. Due to its potential impact, the beetle is considered a significant threat to deciduous forest stands and urban plantings.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg-laying on the bark surface, followed by the larvae boring into the inner bark and eventually the heartwood. The larvae tunnel extensively, which is where they complete their development. Depending on environmental conditions, the generation cycle can take more than one year to complete, during which the larvae remain protected deep within the wood.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of the larvae destroys the vascular tissue of the tree, significantly impairing water and nutrient transport. Symptoms include sap exudation, accumulation of frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree, and the appearance of circular exit holes. Prolonged infestation leads to crown dieback, structural instability of the trunk, and eventual tree death.

Control measures. Management of Anoplophora davidis focuses on rigorous phytosanitary measures, as direct chemical control is difficult once the larvae are inside the wood. Key strategies include:

• Strict quarantine regulations regarding the movement of wood products.
• Systematic field inspections to detect early signs of infestation.
• Removal and destruction of infested trees to eliminate the source of new generations.
• Implementation of pheromone-based monitoring tools to detect and trap emerging adults.
