Systematic position. Anoplophora horsfieldii belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. As a wood-boring insect, it represents a significant threat to forest health, as its larvae feed on the internal tissues of various woody plant species.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest include several deciduous tree species, most notably members of the Populus (poplar) and Salix (willow) genera. These beetles target trees in both wild forest environments and managed landscapes, often showing a preference for trees that are already under some form of physiological stress.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this beetle typically spans one to two years depending on local climatic conditions. Adults emerge during the summer months to mate and deposit eggs into the bark of the host tree. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, where they spend most of their life cycle feeding on the nutrient-rich tissues before pupating and eventually emerging as adults.

Damage and harmfulness. The feeding activity of the larvae creates extensive galleries within the wood, which severely compromises the structural integrity of the tree. This damage disrupts the vascular system responsible for transporting water and nutrients, leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Exit holes on the bark are a key indicator of infestation.

Control measures. Managing Anoplophora horsfieldii requires a combination of physical, chemical, and silvicultural practices. Recommended strategies include:

• Rigorous monitoring and trapping programs to track adult beetle activity.
• Sanitation felling and disposal of infested wood to prevent the spread of the population.
