Click beetle Anostirus

The genus Anostirus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. These insects are widely known in agronomy due to their larvae, commonly referred to as wireworms, which cause significant economic damage to field crops. Adult beetles are characterized by a unique mechanism allowing them to flip into the air with a clicking sound when placed on their backs.

This pest attacks a wide variety of cultivated plants. Major host crops include cereals (wheat, rye, barley), corn, sugar beets, potatoes, and various forage grasses. The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which live within the soil profile and feed exclusively on the underground structures of host plants throughout their development.

The biology and life cycle of Anostirus are complex, often spanning 3 to 5 years depending on environmental conditions. Females deposit eggs in moist soil rich in organic matter. After hatching, the larvae go through several instars, moving vertically within the soil in response to temperature and moisture fluctuations before pupating and eventually emerging as adult beetles.

The damage is characterized by thinning stands and the destruction of germinating seeds and young seedlings. Wireworms feed by severing roots and tunneling into tubers or underground stems. This feeding activity not only weakens the plants, leading to yield loss, but also creates entry points for various soil-borne pathogens, including fungal and bacterial rots, which spoil the final harvest quality.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain populations below economic thresholds:

• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
• Mechanical soil cultivation, such as plowing, which exposes larvae to predators and unfavorable conditions.
• Seed treatment with systemic insecticides to protect the crop during the germination phase.
• Application of granular soil insecticides in areas with high wireworm population density.
