Chestnut click beetle

Systematic position: The chestnut click beetle (lat. Anostirus castaneus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. This beetle is widely recognized for its larval stage, commonly referred to as wireworms, which are among the most destructive subterranean pests in various agricultural ecosystems.

Target crops and damage: The pest attacks a wide range of crops, including cereals, corn, potatoes, and various vegetable species. The larvae feed on germinating seeds, roots, and underground stems. Such activity often leads to poor crop establishment, stunted plant growth, and in severe infestations, the complete failure of the crop, necessitating expensive reseeding operations.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Anostirus castaneus consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult beetle. The larval stage is notably long, typically lasting several years, during which the wireworms feed intensively. They are highly sensitive to soil temperature and moisture, undergoing vertical migrations within the soil profile to find optimal living conditions throughout the year.

Harmfulness and impact: Wireworms are particularly harmful due to their ability to destroy plant tissues beneath the soil surface, where they are difficult to detect until the damage is extensive. Besides direct feeding, their tunneling activities create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can lead to root rot and systemic plant diseases.

Protection measures: Management of the chestnut click beetle relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• proper soil cultivation to disturb larval habitats;
• implementing diverse crop rotations that interrupt the pest's lifecycle;
• seed treatments with systemic insecticides to protect the early stages of plant development;
