Description
The genus Antheraea is part of the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. While these moths are known for their large size and silk-producing capabilities, their larvae are recognized in agronomy as significant defoliators. When population levels become excessive, these insects can cause widespread damage to forestry and orchard environments.
These pests primarily target deciduous trees. Common hosts include oak, birch, willow, and various fruit-bearing species. The larvae are voracious eaters, and because of their large size, they consume significant amounts of foliage in a relatively short period, which poses a threat to plant health and growth.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths lay their eggs on host plants, and the emerging larvae progress through several instars. The pupal stage is spent within a durable, silken cocoon, often attached to twigs or hidden among leaves, providing high protection against many external environmental factors.
The primary form of damage is the total or partial stripping of leaves, known as defoliation. This loss of photosynthetic capacity weakens the host tree, leading to stunted growth, reduced nut or fruit yield, and increased vulnerability to secondary pests and drought. Economic impact is most severe when infestations occur over multiple consecutive seasons.
