The Assam silkmoth (Latin: Antheraea assamensis) is a member of the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. While widely recognized for producing high-quality golden 'Muga' silk, it is also categorized as a potential defoliator in specific agroforestry systems, particularly in regions where its host plants are commercially cultivated.

This species primarily feeds on plants from the Lauraceae family. The larvae are voracious leaf-eaters, often targeting economically important woody plants. When population densities are high, the impact of their feeding can become significant, leading to reduced vigour in affected trees or shrubs.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions such as temperature and rainfall. Larvae go through multiple instars, during which they consume large quantities of foliage, effectively stripping the branches to sustain their rapid growth before the pupation stage.

Damage caused by the Assam silkmoth involves significant leaf loss, which interferes with the plant’s photosynthesis process. Chronic defoliation leads to stunted development, diminished yield potential in fruit-bearing hosts, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, including wood-boring insects and pathogenic fungi.
