Description

The Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) is a prominent member of the Saturniidae family within the order Lepidoptera. While primarily native to North America, its larvae are recognized as occasional defoliators of various tree species, sometimes impacting fruit orchards and ornamental plantings.

This species is polyphagous, feeding on a wide variety of host plants. Preferred hosts include fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and apricot, as well as various hardwoods like birch, maple, and oak. The larvae can cause noticeable damage to foliage when infestations reach higher populations.

The biological cycle involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the leaves of host plants. Once hatched, the larvae undergo five instars, feeding voraciously on leaves. At the end of the larval stage, they construct a thick silk cocoon, usually incorporating leaves, where they pupate before emerging as adult moths.

Damage is characterized by extensive foliage consumption. In cases of high larval density, the caterpillars can strip leaves from branches, potentially leading to total defoliation. This significantly stresses the trees, reduces photosynthetic capacity, and hinders overall growth, which is particularly detrimental to young or recently transplanted saplings.

Effective management strategies should focus on early detection and mitigation. Regular scouting of the canopy for egg masses or young caterpillars is recommended. For smaller infestations, hand-picking remains an effective control measure. In cases of severe outbreaks, applying biological agents like Bacillus thuringiensis or approved systemic insecticides during the early larval stages can successfully reduce the population.
